The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting grants new license to Viacom18 and Star India
Viacom18 got the licenses on June 10, 2021, under dummy channels Eco-Lution, Pick-A-Trick, connected, and My Cam. Star India got the go-ahead to launch Star Kirano, Star Kirano HD, and Odia GEC on July 10, 2021.
The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting gives four latest TV channel licenses to Star India and Viacom18. The ministry’s dashboard suggests that only six license applications are pending in Q1 FY22 as compared to 19 in Q1 FY21.
Viacom18 got the licenses on June 10, 2021, under dummy channels Eco-Lution, Pick-A-Trick, connected, and My Cam. There's a rumour that Ambani's Network18 will enter into sports broadcasting through TV18. Star India got the go-ahead to launch Star Kirano, Star Kirano HD, and Odia GEC. Its subsidiary Asianet Star Communications received licenses for Vijay Super HD and Asianet Movies HD. On July 10, 2021, the Ministry of Information and Broadcast issued these licenses. Earlier, Star India had put channel expansion on hold due to New Tariff Order 2.0
The Ministry of Information and Broadcast (MIB) has also granted them approval to rename their existing channels. Star will launch Star Utsav Movies instead of Star Gold Family. They had planned to rebrand Movies OK and Star Gold 2 from February 1, 2020. Star postponed the launch of Star Sports 2 HD, Star Gold 2 Hd, Vijay Music, Disney Channel HD, and Star Movies Select in 2020.
Viacom18 got the license to rename Rishtey Bhojpuri to Colors Cineplex Bollywood. Initially, the company obtained the license under BDM, a dummy name. So far, the Ministry of I&B has issued licenses to 915 news and non-news to 357 companies and revoked licenses of 347 channels.
Reportedly, the I&B minister Anurag Thakur said they had permitted 228 channels to operate in the last five years. He further added that 204 channels have stopped existing due to various reasons for not meeting the Uplinking and Downlinking conditions.
