Every person is born to make an impact, to see dreams and carve a beautiful tale of life. Today will share one such awe-inspiring story of transwoman Zoya Thomas Lobo who is India's first photojournalist. She has garnered much love and popularity on social media for her wonderful clicks.

Born in Mumbai, Zoya knew that she was different from others since the age of 11. Her father passed away leaving behind Zoya, her sister and mother. Her mother took care of the family, Zoya never dared to reveal her identity to her family.

As reported in Better India, Zoya met her Guru, Salma at the age of 17, Salma helped her identify as a transgender person and introduced her to the transgender community. They accepted her and taught her things like ‘how to clap’. Zoya then joined the group and started begging on trains. However, as time passed she recognised her passion for photography. She saved ₹30,000 of her handouts and bought a second-hand camera.

Zoya had been begging on trains for more than a decade before she got her first break as a photojournalist. In 2020, amid the coronavirus pandemic, the lockdown halted the operations of trains and she lost her means of livelihood. One day, Zoya noticed hundreds of migrant labourers protesting outside the Bandra railway station. She wanted to bring their plight to everyone's notice and so she ran home, got her camera and clicked a few pics which were then picked up by big publications.

Zoya didn't have a full-time job as a photojournalist but she manages to capture current happenings across Mumbai with a journalistic approach. Her press card gives her access to travel to a various location. At present, Zoya is working as a freelance photojournalist. She has uploaded some amazing pictures on Instagram, her profile includes photographs of covid situation, street life, natural views and a few candid clicks. With more than 300 posts Zoya has 3.5K followers currently on Instagram.
