Paralympics 2020: Avani Lekhara wins a gold medal in 10m Air Rifle Standing event

Avani Lekhara wins India's first gold in shooting at the Paralympics and equalled the world record that was set in 2018 by Iryna Shchetnik.

Indian shooter Avani Lekhara becomes the first woman to win a Paralympic gold medal in a 10m Air Rifle Standing (SH1) event. Avani created a record at Paralympics and equalled a world record with a score of 249.6 to win the gold medal.

China's Cuiping Zhang made second on the podium behind Avani with 248.9 and Iryna Shchetnik Ukraine's shooter won a bronze medal with a total of 227.5. The Indian shooter was India's first gold in shooting at the Paralympics and equalled the world record that was set in 2018 by Iryna Shchetnik. Social media is flooded with congratulations tweets and messages. 

Avani became the fourth Indian athlete to win a gold medal at Paralympics after swimmer Murlikant Petkar in 1972, javelin thrower Devendra Jhajharia in 2004 and 2016, high jumper Thangavelu Mariyappan in 2016. The shooters hold a gun with arms in the SH1 Rifle category and have an impairment in their legs as some athletes compete in a seated position while others compete in a standing position.
