Tokyo Paralympics 2020: Historic silver medal for paddler Bhavina Patel in table tennis

Patel gave an exceptional performance throughout the Paralympics. She was undefeated between her opening match and the finals and overthrew several top-ranked players to clinch the silver medal. Reportedly, Bhavina Patel is being called a 'Giant Killer' by the Japanese media.

On the occasion of National Sports day, paddler Bhavina Patel gave a great gift to India as she won the first medal for India in the Tokyo Paralympics 2020. Patel ended her Tokyo Paralympics schedule by winning a silver medal in women's singles class 4. She lost to world number one paddler Ying Zhou of China by 0-3.

Deepa Malik, President of, Paralympic Committee of India, was the first Indian woman to win a medal in Paralympic Games. She won a silver medal in shot put at Rio Paralympics in 2016. Malik is all praises for Bhavina Patel. While congratulating her, Malik wrote on Twitter, "Our Silver Smiles And here's the SILVER... Passing on the baton to a woman athlete on a wheelchair #BhavinaPatel !! Exceptionally proud moment! India wins its first medal at #Tokyo2020 #Paralympics, proudly presenting our #silvergirl".

Patel started playing table tennis 13 years ago. She saw visually impaired children playing table tennis at the Blind People's Association, Vastrapur, Ahemdabad, and got inspired by them to take up the sport. Patel got her first medal win while representing Rotary Club in Ahemdabad. She became world number two in 2011 by winning the silver medal for India at PTT Thailand Table Tennis Championship. Patel won another silver medal in 2013 at the Asian Para Table tennis Championship, Beijing, in women's singles class 4.

In an interview, after winning the silver medal at Toyo Paralympics 2020, Patel mentioned that 'God of Cricket', Sachin Tendulkar, is her inspiration, and she wants to meet him shown her silver medal. Responding to this, Tendulkar tweeted, "You have brought joy to the entire nation, @Bhavinapatel6 ! My best wishes to you & hope to see you once you're back in India".
