World Athletics U-20 Championship: Shaili Singh wins Silver in the long jump event

Shaili Singh won the silver medal and missed the gold medal by just a centimeter. She finished at 6.59m but, Sweden's Maja Askag overtook her by ending at 6.60m to fin the gold medal.

Shaili Singh, the Indian prospect for a gold medal in the long jump at World Athletics U-20 World Championship, won the silver medal and missed the gold medal by just a centimeter. She finished at 6.59m but, Sweden's Maja Askag overtook her by ending at 6.60m to fin the gold medal. Mariia Horielova from Ukraine won the bronze by finishing at 6.50m.

In the post-match interview, emotional Shaili said she could have jumped further than 6.59m and win gold as her mother had told her that the national anthem is played after winning gold. The athlete also said that she is just 17 and wants a gold medal in the next U-20 championship held in Cali, Colombia. Shaili Singh is looking forward to participating in Asian Games and Commonwealth Games that are happening next year.

Upon her final performance, the Tokyo Olympics gold medal winner Neeraj Chopra took to Twitter to congratulate Shaili. His tweet read as "Many congratulations, Shaili! You came so close to gold today, and I'm sure you have a long way to go Congratulations to @anjubobbygeorg1  ma'am for your mentorship and guidance to Shaili". 

Shaili Singh is the pupil of ace long jumper Anju Bobby George. After the final performance, Shaili's coach, Robert Bobby George, said Shaili's speed is her forte and, he will work on her to give more power to compete in upcoming championships. Shaili hails from Jhansi and, she was in Lucknow Sports Hostel but got a break after Robert saw her performance. Previously, she won the National (senior) inter-state championship with 6.48m and, she is currently ranked world No. 2 in U-18 and is a U-20 national record holder.

At the end of the championship, India has two silver and one bronze medal. In this edition of the World U-20 championship, India did not win a gold medal. Earlier, Neeraj Chopra won gold in Javelin in 2016 and, Himas Das won gold in the running event in 2018.
