Ford vehicles to run on Google Android starting in 2023
Ford will soon put millions of its vehicles on Google Android software from 2023.
Ace automaker Ford will soon turn its operating systems over to Google. The company recently announced to put millions of its vehicles on Google Android software from 2023. That means Google Assistant, Google Maps, and other automotive-approved Android apps will be available in Ford's cars without using a smartphone.
According to Ford, the broad integration of Android will enable drivers and passengers to use Google Assistant to change things like climate settings, and it will also provide over-the-air updates that can add new features or give some maintenance issues.
For iOS users, Ford’s system will be compatible with Apple CarPlay and Ford will continue to offer Amazon’s Alexa option too. Although the carmakers haven't mentioned which of its vehicles will get the Android operating system starting in 2023, they said that millions of Ford and Lincoln vehicles will hold it. The vehicles will be available across the world, except in China, where Google is outlawed.
In a statement, David McClelland, VP, Strategy and Partnerships, Ford Motor Company said in a Medium post that they are going to leverage the talent and assets of both companies to push the boundaries of Ford’s transformation, unlock personalized consumer experiences, and drive disruptive data-driven opportunities. This may include projects ranging from modernizing our plants through vision AI, developing new retail experiences when buying a vehicle, creating new ownership offers based on connected vehicle data, and more.
Ford has collaborated with Volvo, General Motors and the Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi Alliance in striking an agreement with Google to use its software to provide the android services. Adding to the Google Play ecosystem, Ford and third-party developers will design apps to enable more personalized ownership experience.
Finally, McClelland added, Teaming up with Google will allow them to accelerate their ability to challenge their current ownership model and deploy new business models to capture recurring revenue and profit from software, data and connected ecosystems.
