In an official statement, the state government said, “The U.S. firm Tesla will be opening an electric car manufacturing unit in Karnataka". The statement was part of a comprehensive document describing the highlights of India’s budget.
In January, the electric carmaker joined Tesla Motors India and Energy Private Limited with its registered office in the city of Bangalore in Karnataka. State Chief Minister B.S. Yediyurappa said in a tweet, which was later deleted, that Tesla would start its operations in India with an R&D unit in Bangalore. However, it was unclear whether he was referring to the same unit.
Meanwhile, in December 2020, Tesla CEO confirmed on Twitter that Tesla will launch in the country in 2021. India has been keen to reduce its usage of oil and cut down on pollution. To boost investment, the country plans to offer $4.6 billion in incentives to companies who will be setting up the advanced battery manufacturing facilities.
