105-year-old organic farmer from Coimbatore honoured with Padma Shri
The 105-year-old Pappammal who resides in Thekkampati, Tamil Nadu won the award for the pioneering work in the field of agriculture.
On the occasion of 72nd Republic Day, a female organic farmer Pappammal from Coimbatore has been bestowed with the prestigious Padma Shri. The 105-year-old who resides in Thekkampati, Tamil Nadu won the award for the pioneering work in the field of agriculture.
Pappammal runs an organic farm which is spread across 2.5 acres of land. She has been cultivating a variety of pulses, millets and vegetables for over nine decades. Apart from farming, she has been also socially and politically active in the past. She also runs a provision store and a food stall. The female farmer is also associated with the education department at the Tamil Nadu Agricultural University.
Pappammal was interested in agricultural practices since her early days. Born in 1914, she lost her parents at a very early age and was brought up by her paternal grandmother in Thekkampatti where she still resides. The 105-years-old has three daughters, three grandchildren, two great-grandchildren and lives with five members of her family. She lost her husband almost a decade ago. As told by her family members Papammal follows a strict health regime. She wakes up every day at 5:30 am and starts working in the field by 6 am.
For now, the entire family is planning to organise a formal celebration for her.
