The government's GST and taxes have made dining out an expensive affair. A lot of tax is implied on certain food items, and restaurants even charge tax for peanuts and the breadbasket. But there is a food item that is exempted from the GST and other taxes.

Papad is now exempt from taxes irrespective of its shape and size and no extra charges will be taken on papad, though it is of any brand. The Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs (CBIC) said in a tweet, "Papad, by whatever name known, is exempt from GST vide Entry No. 96 of GST notification No.2/2017-CT(R). This entry does not distinguish based on the shape of papad. This notification is available at http://cbic.gov.in."

The announcement was made after Industrialist Harsh Goenka tweeted about the round-shaped papad is exempt from GST whereas square papad attracts it. In his tweet, he mentioned, "Did you know that a round papad is exempt from GST and a square papad attracts GST? Can anyone suggest a good chartered accountant who can make me understand the logic?"

Now, one who loves masala papad can order it GST free and relish its taste without worrying about the high prices
