Indian Medical Association (IMA) celebrates July 1 as National Doctors Day in memory of Dr. Bidhan Chandra Roy, remembering him on his birth and death anniversary. This day is dedicated to all the doctors who serve day and night for the wellbeing of humanity and amid these challenging times of the Coronavirus pandemic, they are certainly playing the most crucial role. The pandemic has made us realize the contributions and sacrifices made by doctors, nurses and other health workers around the world.

History:

National Doctors Day was first observed in 1991 in the honor of Bengal Chief Minister Dr. Bidhan Chandra Roy. He is called the 'First medical consultant' in the Indian subcontinent by the British Medical Journal. He was a dedicated doctor serving humanity privately at a nominal rate and also worked as a nurse if necessary. He was awarded in honour of Bharat Ratna on February 4, 1961. Dr. BC Roy had formed modern West Bengal post-independence after acquiring the seat of Chief Minister of Bengal on 23rd January 1948. He established Jadavpur TB Hospital, Kamala Nehru Memorial Hospital, Chittaranjan Seva Sadan, Victoria Institute (college), Chittranjan Cancer Hospital, Chittaranjan Seva Sadan for women and children, for serving humanity. All his life he kept on serving humanity in different ways and also believed that the youth can structure the future of the nation by committing themselves to social work.

As Dr. B C Roy dedicated his life in the field of medicine, this pandemic every doctor is dedicating his/her time so that we can live in a covid-free world.

On this day Good Newwws would like to salute the heroes in white coat. “As god created this world and doctors are protecting it, no doubt they are given the title next to GOD.”
